| I am pregnant with my second and trying to figure out what I need. I already have a Britax car seat for my three-year-old. Will I need another one for my second child when she turns one/20 pounds or will my older child be out of his car seat by then, freeing it up for his little sister?—Penny, Boston, MA | ||
| It depends—different models and brands have different height and weight specifications. For example, the Britax Roundabout ($189, www.tinyride.com) can be used forward-facing for a one-year old and up to 40 pounds, but the Britax Regent ($269, www.elitecarseats.com), a car seat made especially for older children, has a five-point harness for a child up to 80 pounds (forward-facing and one-year-old and up). There are also in-between models like the Marathon that support a child up to 65 pounds (forward-facing and one-year-old and up). Britax has a very user-friendly and helpful site that gives you specifics on your car seat and other ones that you might want to purchase. Go to www.britaxusa.com for more details. Also, check out our story, “Calling All Britneys” on car seat safety. |

Check out Body, Soul and Baby ($18, www.amazon.com) by Dr. Tracy Gaudet, a leader in the field of integrative medicine and a practicing OB/GYN. The book takes you from preconception to postpartum and offers helpful tips conceived to empower a woman during her journey from mom-to-be to mom. It urges women to tune into their bodies and souls daily via tools like journaling and meditation, in an effort to make a connection between the physical and emotional changes that are occurring and to help them have a fully conscious pregnancy. The guide also comprehensively addresses the usual what-to-expect questions that all women have, but it does so in a very positive and enlightened—verses just clinical—way. |
| Where can I find out about the latest recalls?—Mary, Melbourne, FL | |

Yes! Check out www.notinmycart.org, a site from the Consumer's Union, a nonprofit organization with a mission of fostering a fair, just and safe marketplace for consumers. The organization also publishes Consumer Reports (www.consumerreports.org). Not only is it a helpful tool to find out what's been recalled, but it's a great advocacy group to support, too. You can also check the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (www.cpsc.gov) for more on recalls and other need-to-know information. |
