| What is the best way to clean stainless steel appliances? Mine are forever showing fingerprints. —Alicia, Freehold, NJ | |
![]() |
There’s a reason why stainless steel appliances are so popular right now—they’re downright great-looking in a futuristic yet completely classic way. Their main downside, however, is that their shiny finishes often show fingerprints, which detract from their gleam. The best way to remove fingerprint smudges and smears from your appliances is to use a cleansing wipe made especially for stainless steel finishes. They employ ingredients designed to preserve the steel’s shine, yet are tough enough to remove grease and grime. My favorite brand: Weiman Stainless Steel Wipes, which retail for $4.59 at www.drillspot.com. |
| All my friends are having babies, so I’ve been mailing presents out left and right. I’ve spent hours waiting in line at the post office. Is there any simpler solution?—Kelli, New York, NY | ||||

I bypass the post office whenever I can—the lines at the ones by me are just unbearable, and the parking lot is always full. Instead, I use the U.S. Postal Service’s online site, www.usps.com, to do everything from purchasing stamps to printing shipping labels. Got packages? Simply enter your and the recipient’s information into an online form, and the site will generate printable shipping label that’s pre-printed with postage. Tape it to your parcel, and either use the site to schedule a pickup or drop the package off at your local post office. I know, I know, with option B you still have to head over there, but at least you don’t have to wait in line to weight it, but postage and answer all those annoying questions about its contents. Check out www.usps.com for more information. | |||
| I need a good idea for how to store my family’s umbrellas. They seem to always collect in our foyer and when wet, leave puddles all over the floor.—Denise, Bend, OR | ||
| The best solution to your umbrella storage issue: an umbrella stand! Essentially, they’re tall, narrow containers, many of which are decorative, designed to hold tall objects like umbrellas, canes, you name it. Believe it or not, you’re not the only one looking to lessen your umbrella clutter; numerous varieties of umbrella stands exist, created especially for people like you (and countless others, I assure you). Some of my favorites across the design spectrum are the Marianna Umbrella Stand from Ballard Designs ($99.95, www.ballarddesigns.com) and the Cortina and Slice Umbrella Stands from Bellacor ($90 and $83.68, respectively, www.bellacor.com). | ||
