MOM ON THE STREET
MOM-TO-MOM ADVICE ON LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF YOUR OWN GROOVE

Welcome to our latest monthly column, Mom on the Street (ya know, like Man on the Street).
Each month, we'll be asking moms just like you for a slice of their sage advice, insider tips or
tried-and-true wisdom in the hopes that their unique brand of Mother inspires, assuages, calms,
strengthens and even amuses yours.

This month's question:
What do you hope your children will remember about Summer 2007?

Jayanna and her family

Jayanna Nichols is the founder of YoginiStyle (www.yoginistyle.com), a yoga-based clothing line for on-the-go women who want to go from class to street in style. Here's what this North Carolina mom of one has to say:

“My child just turned three on June 20th and is completely obsessed with Dora and Diego. A few weeks ago I just happened to be channel surfing and saw an ad for the Nick Jr. Live production of Go Diego Go, which was coming to North Carolina Father's Day weekend—the same weekend that she was born on three years ago. So my husband and I bought tickets and took her. The expression on her face was priceless when she realized we were at Diego's house. We also threw her a great Dora and Diego birthday party. To me it was coming full circle with something that she enjoys and the fact that she is our joy. I hope we took enough video and photos so that we will all remember this special weekend in the summer of '07.”

Karen Gold is one of the co-founders of PeaceLoveMom (www.peacelovemom.com), a cool t-shirt company dedicating to celebrating moms. Here's what this Atlanta mother had to say:

“For me, it is always exciting when summer comes. Just knowing that it is a time when the schedule goes out the door and there are new experiences ahead is a thrill. I hope my son remembers that feeling of what summer brings. That anything is possible and that it is a time to be creative and enjoy new experiences. Last summer there were no expectations of what was going to happen. We had plans to go here and there. But along the way I didn’t know that my son was going really enjoy fishing. He ended up catching a catfish and a bass—two really big fish for a little guy. I was impressed. It is those unexpected times that create the memories. So I am not sure of what my son will remember about the summer of 2007, but I know it will have something to do with new experiences that he will create for himself."

Karen and her son Nik

Mallory and her son Jamie Mallory Lewis, daughter of legendary children’s performer Shari Lewis, is the star of Starz Home Entertainment’s new direct-to-DVD series Phonics 4 Babies, which debuts in stores in September. Here's what this Malibu mom had to say:

“My son Jamie is eight years old and this summer is the first time in his young life that I have not overscheduled him. During the school year, he gets the bus to his highly competitive prep school at 7:00 am and then he gets home at 4:00 pm.  From there, the schedule is karate, homework, bath and bed.

This summer Jamie will be spending two weeks at day camp, one at computer camp and one at filmmaking camp (his choice).  The rest of the time will be devoted to play, play, play. We live in Malibu, so we’ll be spending some time at the beach.  We will also be playing video games (yuck), reading and relaxing. We both need a break and we are both looking forward to it.”

Sherri Ehrlich is a celebrated kiddie music star and founder of Honey Child Music (www.honeychildmusic.com) in Red Bank, NJ. Here's what this singer, entrepreneur, early childhood education innovator and rockin' mom had to say:

“My son, Oliver, is an only child. His cousin Max, who has been more like a best friend, is coming to visit for a month this summer. Being that they're both very humorous, artistic and creative, they're planning to explore some interesting ideas using the video camera and creating short films. Oliver will also be doing some  part-time work as a busboy in a local Red Bank restaurant.

I'd like him to remember the fun times he will share with his favorite cousin during his last summer before starting his freshman year in high school, but also what it's like to start gaining more responsibility and becoming a young adult. He has been excepted into the Performing Arts Academy at Red Bank Regional H.S. in the creative writing program. I am a very very proud mama and hope that Oliver's summer will be one to remember always.”
