HIP, HAPPENING HOLIDAY HAIR
CELEBRITY STYLISTS LOCK UP THE SEASON'S BEST LOOKS WITH THESE SIMPLE YET
SOPHISTICATED 'DOS

                                       THE LOOK: STRAIGHT AND SHINY
  How to Get It
Celebrity stylist Abell from the John Frieda Salon in New York, who has worked with
celebrities including Kate Hudson, Kate Winslet and Heather Locklear, says the secret to
this style is getting your hair very straight. His tip: use a hair wrap. First, blow dry your hair
until it's about 80 percent dry, then smooth on a dime-sized amount of John Frieda
  Secret Weapon Flawless Finishing Crème
($5.99, www.walgreens.com). “Next, part
your hair the way you would normally wear it. Using your hands and a brush, bobby pin all
of your hair into a flat wrap that circles your entire head, adding additional bobby pins
throughout the wrap to hold it into place,” Abell says. For best results, sleep with your hair
wrapped. To style, simply remove the pins and comb with your fingers.

Charles Worthington dream hair Industry Insider Tip: Ban the dull
Styling product buildup is often the culprit of dull strands. Restore your hair’s gloss with a shine-enhancing shampoo and conditioner like Charles Worthington Dream Hair Radiant Shine Glossing Shampoo and Conditioner ($8.99 each, at rite aid stores nationwide).

                                                       THE LOOK: A SEXY UP-DO

  How to Get It

For a festive yet modern style, try a chignon, advises Rodney Cutler, owner of New York City’s Cutler,
a Redken salon. “It’s very chic and glamorous,” he says. The key to this style is first creating body so that
your hair will have enough texture to hold the style. Begin by spritzing Frederic Fekkai’s Instant
  Volume
Spray through hair ($18.50, www.sephora.com). “Using a medium or large round brush, blow dry
at the roots for fullness,” instructs Cutler. “Create a side part, and then back comb hair from underneath,
paying special attention to creating volume at the crown.” Create a low ponytail at the back of your neck,
then twist it and flip it up so that the ends are pointing up. Secure the twist to your head, using bobby pins
tucked into the twist so that they are invisible, and tuck ends under the twist. For strong hold, spray with
Redken’s Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray
($12.95, go to www.redken.com for salons).

                THE LOOK: CASCADING CURLS
holiday hair cascading curls   How to Get It
Sexy, ethereal curls are the perfect complement to that little black dress, says Harry
Josh, a stylist in New York. “All it takes are the right tools and products and some
patience to transform those dull locks into a sultry mane,” he says. Begin by washing
and conditioning hair with a just-for-curls shampoo like Suave Professionals Healthy
  Curls Shampoo and Conditioner
to tame frizz and define ringlets ($1.99-$2.49, at
drugstores nationwide). Before drying hair, apply a golf ball-sized amount of a volumizing
mousse like Aussie Real Volume Styling Mousse through hair from root to tip ($3.59,
www.drugstore.com). If curls still need a boost after drying, Josh recommends defining
them with a large-barreled curling iron, wrapping small sections of hair around the iron
for a few seconds. After your hair is curled, run fingers through your hair to loosen
waves and prevent a Shirley Temple-esque look. Finish with an extra-hold hairspray like
Jonathan Product’s Finish Hold Firm Hold Spray
($24, www.sephora.com).

                      THE LOOK: GLAMOROUS SHORT HAIR
holiday hair glam short hair   How to Get It
Just because you don’t have Jessica Simpson’s length (and hers come from
extensions anyway), doesn’t mean you can’t have sexy holiday hair. “Short hair
can be instantly glammed up with a sleek, low side part accessorized with
pronounced bobby pins,” Cutler says. To achieve this look, prep your hair with
  a straightening lotion like Aveda’s Hang Straight ($17.50, www.aveda.com).
Blow-dry using a medium or large round brush and finish with a flat iron like the
Curlmaster Nano Ceramic Tourmaline Wet/Dry Flat Iron
($39.99, at
Sally Beauty Supply sores nationwide). Create a very low side part and sweep
hair front to one side, securing hair above the ear with rhinestone bobby pins
like these from Go Girl! ($7.10 for two, www.amazon.com). Finish with
  Redken’s
Vinyl Glam 02 Mega Shine Spray for shine and Workforce 09
  Flexible Volumizing Spray
for hold ($14.94 and 12.95, go to
  www.redken.com
for   salons).

Industry Insider Tip: Season your hair color
It’s wintertime, a.k.a. time to tone down your summer highlights.
Unless you’re a year-round Miami resident (and if you are, consider us envious), summer-blonde streaks look a bit out-of-place with the winter coats and scarves that cold weather brings. Just because it’s cold, however, doesn’t mean you have to abandon multi-tonal hair. “We’re deepening the color of hair for winter by adding lots of lowlights, which are created using the same process as highlighting the hair, except instead of adding lighter tones, we weave deeper, richer ones through the hair, which darkens it while maintaining the same degree of color depth” says Ray Cleary, owner of the Aveda Salons and Spas in Washington, DC and Bethesda, MD.

This season, brunettes are back with a bang, sporting mahogany and chocolate tones, but that doesn’t mean redheads and blondes can’t reveal their dark sides, too. As with brunettes, fairer-and redder-haired gals can also tone down their summer brights for deep, rich, sparkling winter color. If you’re blonde, ask your colorist for caramel and golden streaks, while redheads should request cinnamon, toffee and even burgundy shades.

To maintain your color in between salon appointments, sample some of the brand-new products for women with color-treated hair, all of which are formulated for specific shades. In the shower, wash and condition with Ted Gibson’s Individual Color Shampoo and Conditioner in the shade that best matches your hair color ($36, www.drugstore.com), and once every few weeks, use Clairol Natural Instincts Shine Happy Clear Shine Treatment, the next best thing to an in-salon post-color gloss ($5, www.walgreens.com). If you’re a brunette highlight your color when styling by using John Frieda’s Brilliant Brunette Starlit Waves Wave Enhancing Spray ($6.95, www.folica.com). Redheads can prevent fading with John Frieda’s Radiant Red Color Hydrate Fade-Defying Moisture Masque ($6.49, www.drugstore.com), and blondes can protecting their color while creating perfectly undone ‘dos with John Frieda’s Tousled Tresses Fine Mist Wax ($5.99, www.drugstore.com).
