ACCESSORY TO A FASHIONABLE LIFE
KATE SPADE TELLS THE FAMILY GROOVE HOW TO SUMMER IN STYLE
Kate Spade, the company, knows how to dress up—your arm, your face, your body, your house. You name it,
Kate Spade gives it the old razzle dazzle, by turning an ordinary person, place or thing into one word: fabulous.
The company paints its world, and those who bask in it, with a standout brand of pop art-inspired, postmodern,
cinematic-pastiche melange of all things hip and happy.
So it follows that Kate Spade, the ever-adorably adorned mom, wife, entrepreneur and style icon, knows how to live.
We at TFG wanted to know just how Kate, the hipster's answer to Martha, manages to be so darn groovy.
Here THE FAMILY GROOVE talks to Kate, the woman, about living a life less ordinary.
THE FAMILY GROOVE: The theme of the issue is Season in the Sun. How will you spend
your season in the sun?
Kate Spade: This is where my husband, Andy, and I are completely different from one
another. Andy’s idea of summer is swimming in the ocean, running or bicycling—pretty
much anything that involves movement. My idea of the perfect summer activity is
something I call ‘magazining.' A friend and I will first stock up on magazines and then
come back to the house, where we settle in for an afternoon on the patio—out of the sun.
TFG: What inspires you about summer?
KS: The break from rain and humidity of spring, the perfectly clear skies and the overall mood of summer—there's a sense of ease that comes across.
TFG: How will you spend the Fourth of July?
KS: On the Fourth, Andy and I always make sure we see a parade. We 're lucky because
the local parade goes right by our house on Long Island. It’s one of those events that just
feels like it’s been going on forever—which it probably has.
TFG: How does your daughter inspired your baby line?
KS: Since Bea came along I have had the opportunity to see what's missing in the market. I design things that I would love to have and see her wearing, like striped cashmere
sweaters and little corduroy jackets.
TFG: What are your words of wisdom for working moms?
KS: Stop and enjoy. Time goes by so quickly.
TFG: What's your soundtrack this summer?
KS: “You Are My Sunshine” by Ida/Elizabeth Mitchell and anything by Rufus Wainwright.
TFG: What are three mama must-haves/must do's for July?
KS: A sun umbrella; an easy, laid back attitude; and fun, flat sandals.
TFG: What are three kiddie must-haves/must-do's for July?
KS: It’s amazing how much kids love animals—so the zoo; music lessons; and a sun hat.
TFG: Will you give us a quick tips for living stylishly in July?
KS: Embroidered Mexican tops, Capri pants and open-toe sandals.
TFG: Finish this sentence: Right now I am loving
KS: Spending time with Bea.
TFG: Finish this sentence: Right now my daughter is loving
KS: The water. She loves splashing around in the tub.
TFG: And this one, too: This month my daughter looks so cute when
KS: We play music and she dances around.
TFG: And finally, what's your favorite mama and daughter activity this month?
KS: Playing in Central Park.
So then, whether you're a mom heading a multi-million dollar fashion empire or a mom heading to the supermarket,
it's the little things that make for a big life.
