What’s the deal with wheatgrass? Everyone keeps talking about it, but is it as powerful as they say? —Stefanie, Dix Hills, NY
Wheatgrass Wheatgrass is definitely making yet another comeback. Popular in the ’60s with the peace and love set, the über-juice had a resurgence in the 90s and is now back again to deliver a vitamin-packed wallop to all those who can stomach its not-so-yummy taste. But I say, taste schmaste! Just two ounces of wheatgrass is the equivelent of consuming three and a half pounds of vegetables—and, honestly, the taste grows on you. Shoot it straight or dump it into your favorite smoothie—this wonder-drink contains vitamins A, B12, C and E, plus calcium, iron, phosphorus, folic acid and more. It also contains a big ol’ dose of phytochemicals, those naturally occurring compounds that prevent disease and are believed to attack cancer cells. It’s a big-time detoxifier, too, cleansing the colon, liver and bloodstream as well as strengthening the immune system. Oh, and don’t be fooled by the word wheat. There’s no gluten in this magic potion.

So, to answer your question, yes, it is as powerful as they say. Cheers to your health!

On a side note, the jury’s out about whether or not it’s too powerful for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, so if that’s you, check with your OB/GYN.

I am trying to eat healthier and lose weight, but I am throwing a dinner party and need to serve a dessert. Got any suggestions for a healthy sweet treat that won’t derail my diet? —Carol, Montreal, Quebec
Sneaky Chef Here’s one that’s easy and good for you: chocolate dipped strawberries. According to the Sneaky Chef, Missy Lapine Chase, in her new book, The Sneaky Chef: How to Cheat on Your Man (In the Kitchen), this dessert is “gorgeous, delicious and great for you! The strawberries are rich in fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants, and the chocolate helps release mood-raising endorphins and is packed with flavonoids to help lower blood pressure.”

And this decadent dessert makes a beautiful and sexy presentation. Sweet!

Is there a book for preschoolers that helps get them into being eco-conscious? We talk a lot about being green in our house. Thanks!—Melissa, Arlington, VA
Michael Recycle There are many books out there that can help indoctrinate your kids into an eco-smart lifestyle. For wee young’uns, I recommend Michael Recycle, a fun picture book that empowers as it educates. Set in a town that has been destroyed by trash, the book inspires its readers to take action thanks to its super-green hero, Michael Recycle. Presented in a way that helps little ones understand the message, the timely tome is a great start to greener pastures.
