Stewarts Three Tony Awards

Stewart F. Lane makes a production out of everything he does—
and he's been rewarded for it, to boot! Yes, this three-time Tony
Award winning producer, movie producer, author, playwright and
father of five, part socialite, part Broadway legend, is quite a
character himself. Living and loving life on the great white way
with his family by his side, Lane is the modern renaissance man.
Here he pulls back the curtain of his private life and opens up
about fun, fatherhood and his own personal philosophy for fulfillment.



1. Who are you?

I am a three-time Tony Award winning producer with a total of eight nominations and am currently producing Legally BlondeThe Musical on Broadway at the Palace Theater. I have also just written a book, Let's Put On A Show. It's an insiders guide to producing.

2. How old are you?
I am fifty-five and three quarters.

3. Where do you live?

New York City.

4. How many children do you have? How old?

I have five children, ages nine months (twins) and nine , 16 and 21 years old. Three girls and two boys.

5. What time do you get up?

I get up at 6:30 AM.

6. What daily rituals must you do to feel normal?
Putting my daughter on the bus at 7:30 and going for a brisk walk with my wife around the pond in Central Park.

7. What do you wish you'd do everyday, but haven't been able to incorporate into your routine?
One hour of real exercise in the AM.

8. What do you do for a living?

I produce, write and direct.

9. Tell us about it.
I have produced over twenty Broadway shows. I have written two plays, If It Was Easy…and In the Wings, plus my new book, Let's Put on a Show. I have directed off-Broadway and regionally throughout the country.

I hang out with my family and take them to the theater whenever possible.

11. What's the best thing your father ever told you?

Always follow through with things—don’t assume they’re getting done.

12. What does being a father mother mean?

It means being more responsible and having more fun than I ever imagined.

13.  What's your mantra/personal philosophy?
Find something you are passionate about and go after it.

14. What do you tell other fathers?

Children grow up whether or not you’re around, so be as much a part of their lives as possible.

15. Finish this sentence:  I want my children to know

I want my children to know that I leave them a formidable legacy in the theater.

16. Who inspires you?
My father and my friend and partner for over thirty-five years, Jimmy Nederlander.

17. What are you passionate about?

My family and the American Theater.

18. How do you balance your life as man, a father, a friend?

1/3, 1/3 and 1/3.

19. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?

I wish I knew how expensive New York real estate was going to be.

20. How do you get your groove on?

I get my groove on by watching my children’s achievements.
