| Travel as lightly as possible | |
| With child(ren) ages one to three, try to schedule naps during the vacation day | |
| Consider locales that are not specifically “family-friendly”—you don’t want to inhibit the excitement or adventure of going away. |
|
| Wherever you go and whatever you do, enjoy your familyand yourself. |
| Create a CD with many of your child’s (and your) fave songs to play | |
| Leave and/or drive during your child’s naptime | |
| Bring a DVD with a couple of your child’s favorite movies | |
| Bring a jogging stroller for outside exercise—and sun! |
| Choose a flight around your child's naptime. This is huge! You’re guaranteed some peace on the flight and many compliments from other passengers who say, “We didn’t even know there was a child on board!” | |
| Make sure you’re feeding your baby a bottle at take off and landing to alleviate any pain in the ears. For toddlers, you can give them juice. This means asking the flight attendants for something to drink immediately when you get on the plane, given the current flight restrictions, which allow you to bring formula for a baby. | |
| Wear clothes that will expedite your family’s move through security. |
| Pack snacks—for you and your child. | |
| If traveling with an infant and remaining stateside, don't pack a week’s worth of diapers. You can buy diapers and other essential items at a grocery store when you arrive at your destination. | |
| On the flip side, if you know you are traveling to a resort or a tourist destination, and getting to a local grocery store would prove difficult, pack what you can from home like sunblock, pampers, wipes, formula, snacks, etc. This will save you a lot of money. | |
| Bring a portable DVD player with only a few movies for the travel part. | |
| Make sure DVD player has over two hours of battery life. | |
| Bring plenty of lightweight games, toys, paperback books, crayons and coloring books—you’ll need them car trips, airport waits and duration of the flight. |
| Always choose a room with a microwave and a refrigerator for quick meals and formula storage. | |
| Choose a hotel that offers free breakfast. Feeding an entire family can be quite costly so every little bit helps. |
| Consider traveling with a nanny or younger family member who can help out |
| Check your college alumni office for college-sponsored, family-oriented group trips. | |
| For traveling w/ newborns, try a cruise. All your aqua-baby will need is nursing and a soft surface to sleep. |
| Educate yourself when it comes to your child’s passport. When applying, children need to appear in person and both parents’ consent, relationship to the child and nationality need to be documented. For rules and fees, peep www.iafdb.travel.state.gov. |
| If you are traveling to a destination like Disney World, be sure to buy a squirt bottle, Mickey Mouse, baseball cap or any other paraphernalia you think your child would want at a store in the surrounding area before entering the park—and have a tote bag to carry it all. Your wallet and your pocketbook will thank you for it. |
