| I made the mistake of moving to a new town and purchasing a car without opting for adding the navigation system. What was I thinking? —Allison, Washington, DC | |
| Don’t worry, Allison—all isn’t lost—and neither will you be anymore. I swear by the Tom Tom GO 510 Navigation System ($399.99, www.officedepot.com) to get me where I need to go without having to rely on Google Maps (or pulling over and asking directions at a shady gas station). Equipped with detailed maps that provide door-to-door navigation across the US and Canada, this device features a four-inch, extra-wide color touch screen as well as Bluetooth technology, which allows you to make and receive calls with the touch of a screen (a bonus in those cell phone-unfriendly DC streets!). Your directions and instructions are delivered by a friendly, clear (read: not creepy) voice, and even if you mistakenly screw up, it will redirect you onto the correct path. If only it served as a life coach as well... | ![]() |
| What’s the best way to store purses? —Olivia, Tacoma, WA | |

If you have ample closet and/or shelf space, I recommend stuffing your bags with acid-free tissue paper (plastic dry cleaning bags work well too), and, if they came with one, storing them in their appropriate dustbag. If space is an issue, keep your bags off the ground with the Hollywood Purse Hook ($9.99, www.asseenontv.com), a long, strong hook with non-slip base that rests on the edge of any table, desk, counter or shelf surface. |
| My family is taking an eight-hour road trip for Labor Day. Any suggestions on how to keep my kids, ages six and eight, busy without relying on DVDs?—Melissa, Rumson, NJ | ||

If you’re not keen on placating your young kids with videos, I recommend hooking each one up with their own Leapster Learning System ($59.99, www.toysrus.com). Before you think “no more video games!”, rest assured that this cool system is actually loaded with fun, action-packed games (my personal favorite is the School House Rock series—who doesn’t love Conjunction Junction?) that teach essential skills for preschool through 4th grade. The bottom line: they think they’re playing, but they’re really learning—everyone wins! | ![]() |
